A one-legged woman moves forward on crutches with a steady, measured gait, occasionally lowering her eyes. Her right leg has been amputated right up to the base of the buttock. The woman has neither a right leg nor any prosthetic for it; the wind tugs at the empty right side of her skirt. As she walks, she keeps the crutches close to her sides, moves them both slightly forward at the same time, bears her weight on the hand grips, and then takes a step with her only leg — the left one.
