Recovered 1996 US county police interrogation tape, 4:3, played from a worn VHS cassette. Heavy analogue artefacts: chroma bleed, scan lines, tracking noise at the frame edges, slight vertical jitter, colour desaturated toward green, soft low-resolution detail. Harsh flat overhead fluorescent light. A small windowless room: beige cinderblock wall, a scuffed metal table bolted to the floor, a reel-to-reel recorder at the edge of frame. One fixed ceiling-corner camera, wide angle, locked off: no pan, no tilt, no zoom, no drift, not once. Seated at the table: a white man, 47, entirely average build, thinning light-brown hair combed to one side, receding hairline, broad mild placid face with no memorable features, close-shaven, pale blue work shirt buttoned to the collar. He sits very upright with both hands flat on the table, fingers together, motionless. For the first four seconds he listens, still and attentive, head slightly inclined toward an unseen officer to the left of the lens. An off-camera male voice, flat and tired, asks in Spanish: "Señor Pike. Si lo único que quería era estar dentro de la casa, ¿por qué no se limitó a entrar?" He answers immediately, without hesitation, in a low even mid-baritone, as if the answer were obvious: "Porque mientras estuvieran dentro, la casa era suya." His expression does not change at any point. He then sits in silence for the remaining seconds. Fluorescent hum and turning tape under everything. No music. DO NOT INCLUDE: camera movement, music, timecode, date stamp, subtitles or any text in frame, blood or violence, flashbacks or cutaways, dramatic lighting, shallow focus, or any behaviour that reads as menacing or theatrical.
