In the semi—darkness, pierced by the trembling light of wax candles and the reflections of burning coals in the stove, Tsar Ivan Vasilyevich IV, nicknamed the Terrible, lies on a high bed - a man whose features once embodied imperious beauty, but now ruthlessly scarred by time and hardship. He is 53 years old, but he looks much older. His face is haggard, covered with deep wrinkles, especially noticeable in uneven light. The king's chambers are a gloomy, enclosed space: The lighting is sparse: candles in silver sconces barely dispel the darkness, casting long, swaying shadows on the carved oak panels of the walls.
